Ever wondered how a seed becomes the food we eat? Scott visits the Spudshed production nursery to show us a little seed becomes a head of Broccoli.
- Broccoli has many health benefits, from the Calcium, antioxidants and vitamins contained within, but there is a lot that goes into the production of the growing the plant, so we can consume them and reap the benefits.
- It all starts from the soil, it needs to balanced containing the right mixture of trace elements and Ph level.
- The seedlings are cared for at the nursery and once established they go out to the farm with enough energy to grown into a healthy mature plant.
- The nursery has a seeding tunnel which mixes the soil and fills up the seedling trays, which then goes through an automatic seeder dropping a seed down a cell and into the prepared soil in seedling tray and through a watering tunnel.
- The trays are then taken to the germinating room where they remain for roughly 3 days before they are taken out to the open.
- In winter the seedlings remain in the nursery for 5 to 5 ½ weeks and 4 weeks in Summer.
- The seedlings are then taken out to the Spudshed farms planted under the sun, and are still cared for under the sun and by the dedicated Spudshed farmers until they are harvest, packed on ice and sent straight to the Spudshed stores.
- Broccoli is packed with vitamin C, contain lots of fibre which is important for our digestive systems and contains 47mg/100gm of Calcium which is great for our bones and teeth. Most importantly, broccoli contains anticarcinogenic properties, so we should all think to include broccoli in our diets at least once a week.
