Slane Whiskey
Programme: Delish Destinations: Republic of Ireland
Broadcast date: October 7th, 2018
Story: Slane Whiskey
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
There’s something quite unique about Irish whiskey that separates it from the rest. Trevor takes a tour of Slane Castle’s newly developed distillery and discovers what it takes to create a fine Irish drop.
- Within the iconic Slane Castle estate, the 250-year-old stables have been renovated and transformed into a state of the art whiskey distillery. A pure example of passion and craftsmanship where old meets new.
- The whiskey at this distillery is created from the barley grown on the estate itself and is considered distinctly different to Scottish and American whiskey.
- The distillery is a grandeur construction with numerous rooms housing different and large equipment items for each stage of the distilling process.
- So, what’s the difference between American, Scottish and Irish whiskey? Well, a lot of it comes down to the type of barrels used for aging the whiskey, the number of times the whiskey is distilled and the country origin of the whiskey.
- The Slane Irish Whiskey takes many of its qualities from their signature Triple Casked process. Their whiskey is aged in three varieties of barrels, all of which contain their own unique “flavour” and aroma. Once the liquid has been aged to perfection, it is then masterfully blended to create the perfect Irish drop.
- The artful blend is what makes the Slane whiskey so unique - still very Irish, but it certainly stands out from the crowd.
- The final aging process is one of the most important – the older the whiskey, the better.
