Programme: Delish Destinations: Republic of Ireland
Broadcast date: October 7th, 2018
Story: Slane Castle
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Along the Boyne food trail, Trevor visits Slane, tucked in the Boyne Valley region, and home to one of Ireland’s best outdoor concert venues and prized whiskey.
- Slane Castle, set in the middle of a 1,500-acre estate in the heart of the Boyne Valley, County Meath, overlooks the River Boyne.
- The castle in its existing form was reconstructed by the Conyngham Family back in 1785. It’s remained in the family for hundreds of years and is connected directly to Dublin by one of the only straight roads in Ireland, in honour of King George IV.
- The region around Slane Castle has become well known for its local produce, dairy and cattle which are well sought after right across Europe. But it’s their barley that is one of their most prized products, used to make some of the country’s finest whiskeys.
- 800 acres of the Slane Castle Estate is dedicated to growing barley, which it has done for the past 250 years.
- In the 1970s and 80s the estate decided to branch out and diversify, transforming some of the space into a world class outdoor concert venue. It’s played host to an incredible list of musicians and rock groups, including: U2, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Guns ‘N Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, David Bowie, Queen and REM.
- You can stay at Slane Castle yourself and try “glamping” in one of their luxurious tents on the castle grounds and also hire bikes to explore the surroundings.
