Growing Potatoes
- Originating from South America, and now a staple of most Western diets, potatoes come in all sizes and colours and growing them has never been easier.
- You don’t need a large garden bed to grow potatoes, you can also grow them in pots!
- To grow in a pot, you’re best to get either a standard pot or even a planter bag. The most important thing is choosing the right potting mix.
- Top quality potting mix is essential – make sure to pick one with a wetting agent, bio-stimulants, composted organics, and controlled fast release fertilisers.
- So how do you do it? Cut your potatoes in half, place 12 starter tubers in your planter bag or 5 tubers in your pot. Cover with potting mix, water, and watch them grow.
- When you see green shoots starting to spurt out, add more potting mix, encouraging the plant to climb out of the soil and develop fruiting nodes. Keep doing this until the bag or pot is full of soil and then let them grow.
- When the plants have flowered and start to yellow, that’s your time to harvest!
