In 1950 a group of Western Rock Lobster fishermen wanted to take control of their supply chain and marketing so the Geraldton Fishermen’s Cooperative was formed. Today they have now grown to become the largest supplier in the world!
- Geraldton Fishermen’s Cooperative are an example of a success story of primary producers working together for collective benefit.
- The Western Rock Lobster fishery is a world leader in sustainability and is the first fishery in the world to be certified by the World Wildlife Fund’s Marine Stewardship Council. Quality control is at the heart of everything the Co-op does, from the moment the fishermen catch the product right through to delivery to customers at home and abroad.
- Every year the Coop exports nearly 4 million kilograms of rock lobster but during the festive season the focus turns to the local market with West Aussies flocking to buy their local delicacy to share with family and friends.
- The Western Rock Lobster species are unique to Western Australia, it is revered as the world’s best for it’s meat quality and good looks.
