The Shuckle Ferry

Segment: The Shuckle Ferry
Episode: Auckland
Air Date: 15th February 2019
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

New Zealand is home to some of the world’s finest seafood, with the Shuckle Ferry giving guests the rare opportunity to experience a working oyster farm.

  • The Shuckle Ferry has been running since 2015 in one of New Zealand’s fastest growing tourist regions.
  • On arrival, guests are greeted with the famous New Zealand hospitality – Manaakitanga, the Kiwi connection with people, expressed through kindness and hospitality.
  • The tour leaves from Scott’s Landing, nestled in the Mahurangi Harbour. You don’t have to worry if you’re not great on boats, as the harbour is very calm.
  • The tour runs on the low tide, giving guests the opportunity to see just how oyster farming works.
  • Oyster farming is sustainable – they’re grown on wooden sticks, caught and put out into deeper waters. They’re taken off the sticks, and everything is recycled.
  • Once guests arrive at the farm, the operator gets to work – on come the rubber trousers and into the water they go.
  • Guests are allowed to eat as many oysters as they like, so long as they shuck their own oysters. For an extra treat, the tour operator may fire up the barbeque.
  • There are two tour options available – the One-Hour Shucking Experience will leave at any tide, but the Two-Hour Full Shucking Experience is a much more rewarding experience.
