Aquaponics Systems

Story: Aquaponics Systems
Episode: Episode 5
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 6th March 2022

Sustainability is becoming a large part of our everyday life and there’s things you can do it at home to make your food more sustainable. Trev shows you his aquaponics system, his current crop, and how it helps the rest of his garden.

  • Aquaponic systems are replicated in a natural environment. Effectively the large tanks are home to baby Barra and some silver perch.
  • They are fed a special diet of protein pellets, and their water becomes nutrient-rich because the manure is cycled up into grown beds full of a unique hydroponic mix of porous stone.
  • The gravel allows for free movement of the water and planets.
  • The plants you can grow include Kang Kong, the Asian Vegetable.
  • Watercress is incredibly good for you as it’s a densely packed nutrient & chemical source, which is said to be good for blood health, reducing blood pressure & hypertension.
  • To grow Barramundi, they will take about 24 weeks from fingerling to a 750-gram plat sized fish.
