Title: Tarralea Grove
Broadcast: Episode 10, 9th August 2018
Presenter: Scott Taylor

Just like a good base line, olive oil is that ingredient that keeps everything in check and today Scott is out sampling the sweet oils of Tarralea.

  • Starting as a hobby for Barry and Anne has now overtaken their Jarrahdale property.
  • Taking out the Gold medal at the Perth Royal Food Awards with their Olive Oil made from a unique blend of great varieties.
  • Barry not only competes in the awards, but is a judge to due to his knowledge on Olive oils. However, if you are competing and your are a judge, your oil will by a judged by a different panel.
  • The judges are looking for fruitiness, a good aroma and pungency with a little kick of pepper at the back of the throat that lingers on when they judge the oils.
  • Almost at retirement, Barry took a left hand turn to follow a previous interest and decided to become an olive farmer.
  • The soil on their property is perfect for growing olives as it is gravelly, and it drains from under the roots of the trees as olive trees do not like wet roots.
  • Barrry and Anne prune their trees to a specific shape that they believe helps them produce their award winning drops.
  • There are also citrus trees on the property which allows Barry and Anne to infuse the some of their oil at the processing stage to create citrus infused oils. Also available is Garlic infused oil that Barry sources from a local producer in the area.
  • 128 other entries were also judged as part of the Perth Royal Food Awards in 2017, and the prestigious title of Best WA oil is only possible thanks to the brilliant work of the Royal Agricultural Society of WA, a not for profit organisation that drives the Perth Royal Food Awards, helping us all identify the best in the West.
